Journal #5: Post your thesis statement. Be sure it addresses what stylistic choice Hurston made, what the effect of that choice is, and why she would create that effect.
Thesis: Hurston starts her novel with the ending in order to make the reader want to know how that ending came to be. She did this to better engage the reader in the book and keep them engaged throughout the story.
Did Hurston do this only to make the reader better engaged or did she do this to do something else as well? Is there another reason she started her novel at the end?
ReplyDeleteI think your thesis is good, but how would you support it with evidence from the book?
I agree with Isabella in that I think motivation wasn't the only reason that Hurston started her novel at the end. Think about what effect knowledge of the end of the book has on the reader.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a good idea, but Hurston probably did this to convey some sort of theme or idea, not just to keep the reader engaged.
ReplyDeleteYou might want to name the specific literary element or technique that she used instead of just saying what she did. Like saying she manipulated the structure or chronology of the story?
ReplyDeleteBuilding off what Montana said, how does knowing the ending a book affect the reader's perspective of the character, or how they perceive the rest of the book?
ReplyDeleteIf I were you I'd change the topic. While it's do-able, the starting from the end could have many effects that even contradict themselves. If you were to do this, I'd be extremely specific with everything.
